Three Foundation Lines
Kotzebue - Line from ( Arthur Walden Chinook Kennel )Arthur Walden was an explorer, writer, breeder and musher.Walden’s dogs were
taken over, by Milton & Eva Seeley while Walden was on expedition to antarctica.
When the Great Depression hit America Arthur Walden's wife sold the Chinook dogs and
the name Chinook Kennels to the Seeley's in order to survive the depression.
Eva Seeley (Nicknamed 'Short ') known as sled dog headquarters.
Eva Seeley supplied and trained dogs for both the Byrd
Expeditions and the United States Service Expeditions to Antarctica.
M’Loot - line from Paul Voelker. He had spent most of his
life breeding and training dogs and he was also an experienced sled driver.Voelker's line are seen in
many pedigrees. The foundation of ( Silver Sled Kennel ) Voelker came up with a little
bit different style of Alaskan Malamute, the M’Loot dogs were larger and had a thicker tail then the kotzebue
dogs. And the Kotzebue line only included dogs of grey/white, while the M'Loot dogs varied in colour.
Hinman ( Hinman Irwin Strain ) The Himan Strain mixed with the M’Loot
line helped to contribute to breed quality, and some of the best representations of the breed. The Himan line was a strong influence on the combination of M’Loot and Kotzebue lines to produce
the Husky-Pak line. Which in turn produced many champions and foundation
dogs for the breed.
The breed was recognized by AKC in 1935 and the first dog registered
was Rowdy Of Nome. The original registry for AKC was very short, just long enough to get enough
dogs registered for a base for the breed to grow. (At this time the dogs
registered were Kotzebue line ) All Alaskan Malamutes registered before 1950 were kotzebue .
During World War II many of the few registered malamutes, were loaned or sold for war duty. After
the war the dogs were used on an expedition to antarctic the malamute served in antartica. Then due to a bureaucratic decision,
they were chained to an ice floe and destroyed by an explosive charge.
Some time after this dreadful event the AKC realized they had hardly any registered malamutes
left.
So, they reopened the AKC Registration adding the M’Loot and the Himan strains to the
already registred Kotzebue line.
Quality had to be proven by showing each applicant as a ‘listed’ dog and obtaining
10 championship points.
