Alaskan Malamute Temperament

The Alaskan Malamute is a pack dog with a strong pack instinct. The malamute will consider you & your family to be part of their pack. Malamutes want to be with their pack, they do not do well away from the rest of the pack.

A malamute can be same sex aggressive.

Alaskan malamutes have a natural hunting instinct,

if it is small, furry, or squeaks, they will chase it.

The malamute is not usually a one-man dog probably because of the pack instinct.

They do not make good guard dogs as they will lick the face and hold the door for the robber.

They are extremely intelligent, but can be very stubborn.

A malamute will test you through out there life.

If they can get away with ‘ something’ then they will.

Training can be a bit of a challenge, because of there stubbornness, and they do get bored very easily.

The malamute will try to train the owner and most can easily accomplish it, if your not careful.

Training your malamute is very important, and could be the difference between a forever home and ending up in the pound.

Malamutes that do not get appropriate training will normally end up with behavioral problems or even aggression and will usually end up in the pound and most likely euthanized.

Socialize your malamute puppy with other dogs and people right from the start.

Alaskan malamutes learn things quickly. But, it is getting them to do something repeatedly that is the hard part.

Most Alaskan malamutes generally love children.

However young children should never be left unsupervised with any puppy or dog no matter what the breed / yours or someone else’s. Most problems involving children and dogs, are because the child was being a child, and the dog was being a dog, and the parents were not supervising either one.

Children should help in training your malamute pup (with parents supervision) training should start early.

The over all nature of a malamute is a happy tail wagin, face licking, lovable dog.

However the Alaskan malamute is not typically recommended for a first time dog owner as mistakes can be easily made, and sometimes very hard to correct, if you don’t know what you are doing.

A malamute will take advantage of a situation, if they can get away with it.

It goes back to that pack instinct again, they will try to be the alpha dog of the pack if they can.

Talking- Malamutes can be very vocal, but normally do not bark. Instead they talk  woo woo woo a malamute will hold a conversation with you as long as you are willing to talk.

Malamutes will howl usally when they hear a noise like a fire whistle or police car siren. High pitched noises set them off to howl.
